Dakota Electric helps make Rosemount workforce housing project energy efficient

Do you know how much it costs to rent an average two-bedroom apartment in Dakota County? It's $912 a month, a significant amount for families with modest incomes. The high cost of housing is the driving force behind the Dakota County Community Rosemount workforce housing projectDevelopment Agency's (CDA) Family Townhome Program. The program currently offers 455 townhome units at affordable rental rates to moderate-income families with children under the age of 18.

“The program continues to grow because of the need for workforce housing,” said Mark Ulfers, executive director for the Dakota County CDA. According to Ulfers the 32 unit Carbury Hills Townhome development in Rosemount, slated to be ready for residents in the summer of 2008, already has a waiting list of potential occupants.

“Carbury Hills is our 16th workforce housing development, but our first in Rosemount,” said Ulfers. “We concentrate on building in Dakota County's growth areas and have been looking for a Rosemount site for a long time.”

Carbury Hills is also in Dakota Electric's service territory, giving Dakota Electric the opportunity to help design units that not only provide lower rent but also lower energy costs.

“We gladly volunteered to help with the project,” said Michael Hoy, Dakota Electric's energy services manager. “We were able to work with other utilities in the planning phase to come up with a design that provided the lowest operating cost for members.”

As part of the project, Dakota Electric provided rebates for an Energy Star® dishwasher, refrigerator and 14 SEER air-source heat pump for each unit and continues to look for additional energy-saving contributions, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
