Local manager provides young employees more than a paycheckIt's not rare to see a local teen earning extra cash by doling out change at the mall or making your afternoon coffee at Starbucks. But, Ken Kooyer views youth employment As manager of Lakeville's Kenwood Avenue Starbucks, Kooyer teaches valuable work habits and skills to his young employees that they will take with them long after they leave their part-time job. This approach to youth employment made Kooyer the perfect candidate for the Youth Employment Services Award, which recognizes a local employer, individual or program that has made significant contributions to youth employment. Kooyer was nominated by Christine Parker, a teacher at Lakeville North High School who has witnessed Kooyer's commitment to youth employment extend far beyond the walls of his coffee shop. Kooyer not only supports the Lakeville North High School's work-based learning program and local DECA organization, but he also helped start a student-operated business venture, which he continues to support. Dakota Electric presented Kooyer with the Youth Employment Services Award at the Dakota-Scott Workforce Investment Board Legislative Awards Breakfast on January 25. |
