National energy legislation

In addition to legislation at the state level, significant national energy legislation was passed in late 2007 when President George Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

Included in the bill are measures to reduce the projected carbon dioxide emissions by reducing America's dependence on oil and enhancing energy conservation and efficiency.

The bill aims to reduce America's oil dependence by requiring fuel producers to use more alternative fuels and increasing fuel economy standards for vehicles by 40 percent.

The act also makes significant strides in increasing energy efficiency for federal government buildings by requiring all general purpose lighting in federal buildings to use Energy Star® products or products designated under the Energy Department's Federal Energy Management Program.

Additionally, the bill sets new appliance efficiency standards and establishes an Office of High-Performance Green Buildings in the U.S. General Services Administration.
