Members' donations help ease growing problem

The numbers are staggering. It is a comment uttered by nightly news anchors in response to the current mortgage crisis and economy. The financial impact of the slowing economy and mortgage crisis is rippling through the nation and our area hasDakota Electric's directors present a check for more than $26,000 for local charities. Talking to employees from the agencies trying to help is perhaps the best way to see how bad the problem really is. Allison Gontarek of the Community Action Program (CAP) says CAP is seeing the increase in need. “Energy assistance and food shelf use is at an all time high,” said Gontarek.

Gontarek along with Mary Ajax from the Community Action Council (CAC) cite an increase in job loss, abuse and foreclosures among the reasons for the increased need.

In an attempt to help, Dakota Electric members donated more than $26,000 to Helping Neighbors®, a program Dakota Electric created to assist these local agencies in helping those in need.
