Better yet, discovering what appliances cost the most to operate is one of the first steps in determining how to lower energy use. After you find out just how much the extra refrigerator in your garage costs to operate, you may decide saving money is more important than a large supply of chilled soda. Energy monitors available An energy monitor is a simple way to determine exactly how much energy a specific appliance uses. By plugging the energy monitor into an outlet and then plugging an appliance into the energy monitor and turning it on, you can see how much electricity your refrigerator, dehumidifier, cell phone charger, computer or other device uses. Energy monitors can also help compare energy use. For example, record the energy your refrigerator uses for three days, then clean the coils and record for another three days to see how much energy you can save by keeping the coils clean.
