Dakota Electric Association is a member-owned, nonprofit electric utility serving parts of Dakota, Goodhue, Scott, and Rice counties, just south of the Twin Cities. Serving more than 95,000 members, Dakota Electric is the second-largest electric cooperative in Minnesota and is ranked among the 20 largest electric distribution cooperatives nationally.

In 1998, Dakota Electric joined Touchstone Energy, an alliance of local, consumer-owned electric cooperatives across the country. Millions of businesses and homes count on Touchstone Energy cooperatives for power. As a Touchstone Energy partner, we are rededicating ourselves to providing reliable, affordable electric energy and a high level of personal service to our members and the communities in which they live.

Dakota Electric is a distribution cooperative. Distribution cooperatives provide electric service directly to residential and commercial/industrial members. Wholesale power is provided to distribution cooperatives by generation and transmission (G&T) cooperatives. Generating plants and electric transmission facilities are operated by G&T cooperatives on a nonprofit basis. Dakota Electric's G&T is Great River Energy in Elk River, Minnesota.
