The NRECA Electric Cooperative Youth Tour is an all-expenses-paid leadership and educational opportunity for high school students to travel to Washington, D.C. and learn firsthand how our government works, how electric cooperatives serve their communities, and how young leaders can make a difference.

Each summer, thousands of students from electric cooperatives across the country come together for a week of learning, leadership development, and unforgettable experiences. Dakota Electric is proud to sponsor local students to represent our cooperative, our community, and Minnesota on this national stage.

What is the Youth Tour?

Started in 1958, the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour brings students from rural and suburban communities to Washington, D.C., to:

  • Learn about American government and civic engagement
  • Meet elected officials and policymakers
  • Tour historic landmarks and memorials
  • Connect with students from across the country
  • Build leadership skills and lifelong friendships

Students gain a deeper understanding of how cooperatives operate and why local, member-owned utilities like Dakota Electric play an important role in their communities.

  • High school sophomore, juniors, & seniors
