Small changes, powerful results.

Dakota Electric’s summer rates better reflect the cost we pay for wholesale electricity when increased energy use drives up the demand and cost of electricity. Summer rates go into effect every June, July and August.

Take control of your energy use with Dakota Electric’s smart, money-saving options. Sign up for our free Cycled Air Conditioning® program and receive a $39 summer bill credit — all while helping reduce demand during peak times.

You can also receive a $25 rebate for having your AC tuned up by a licensed contractor of your choice. Plus, if you’ve made the switch to battery-powered yard tools, we offer rebates on those too!

Rate Case Update

On June 6, 2025, Dakota Electric and the parties to our rate case, the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General, signed a Settlement Agreement resolving all issues in the case.

If approved by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, the Settlement reduces our rate increase from $23.81 million, or 11.0%, to $20.88 million, or 9.62%. The Settlement also reduces the proposed increase for the average Residential member from approximately 13.0% to 8.3%.

Dakota Electric continues to expect a final decision by the Commission in late 2025 or early 2026 and the interim rate increase of 9.5% will remain in effect until new rates are implemented. For additional information about the rate case and rate case settlement, please visit our Rate Case pages.

Future Facility Approved

Dakota Electric’s Board of Directors has officially approved the construction of a new energy center on land purchased east of Cedar Avenue and 225th Street West. This marks a major milestone in the development of a facility that will support continued innovation, enhance service reliability, and foster greater collaboration in the years to come.

Burnsville Franchise Fee

The Burnsville City Council approved updated franchise fees on January 21, 2025, which will be charged to all electric and natural gas customers within the city.

These fees, collected through utility bills starting in July 2025, will fund the police city hall project. Residential customers will pay $8 per month, with higher fees for commercial and industrial accounts.

Dakota Electric will collect the fees and remit them to the city. Questions about the city’s franchise fee can be directed to Burnsville City Hall at 952-895-4400.
